Not every NDIS support requires a registered provider — but Supported Independent Living (SIL) does. Because SIL involves higher-risk supports delivered in a person's home, the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission requires providers to be formally registered and audited against the NDIS Practice Standards before they can deliver it.

That means checking registration status isn't just due diligence — for SIL specifically, it's a requirement. Here's how to do it.

1

Open the NDIS Provider Register

The Commission publishes a free, public register of every registered NDIS provider.

2

Search by provider name

Enter the provider's registered business name — not a trading or brand name, if they differ.

3

Check the registered support categories

Confirm "Supported Independent Living" (or the relevant support item) appears in their registration scope, not just any NDIS registration.

4

Note the registration expiry date

Registrations are time-limited and re-audited periodically — an expired listing is worth querying directly with the provider.

A registered provider also has a public NDIS Commission complaints and incident management pathway, and must meet ongoing obligations around behaviour support, worker screening and safeguarding — protections that don't apply to unregistered arrangements for supports like SIL.
