Confirming a provider is registered for SIL is the first filter, not the last one. Once you've confirmed that, the real question is whether they'll actually deliver a stable, well-governed home — and that comes down to how they operate day to day, not what's on their registration certificate.

Here are five questions worth asking directly, whether you're a participant, a family member, or a support coordinator comparing options.

1

Who is actually on shift, and how consistent is the team?

High staff turnover is one of the biggest hidden risks in SIL. Ask how many regular staff are rostered to a home, and how the provider handles continuity when someone leaves.

2

What clinical oversight is actually included?

Some providers charge separately for nursing input, or only provide it reactively after an incident. Ask specifically what clinical oversight is built into the base support model.

3

How is housemate compatibility assessed?

A good provider won't place someone into a vacancy purely because a bed is free. Ask how they match support needs, routines and personalities before proposing a placement.

4

What's the actual response time on referrals and incidents?

Get a specific number, not "as soon as possible." A provider confident in their process will tell you exactly how quickly they respond to referrals and to on-the-ground incidents.

5

How do they handle urgent or short-notice placements?

Circumstances change quickly — hospital discharges, family crises, unsafe living situations. Ask what their process looks like when there isn't months of lead time.

Why this matters more than the marketing

Every provider's website will say similar things about being "person-centred" and "quality-driven." The questions above are designed to get past that language to specifics you can actually compare. A provider that answers clearly and specifically is usually a good sign; vague or evasive answers are worth noting.

If you're weighing SIL against a less structured option, it's also worth reading how structured in-home SIL differs from informal in-home support — the same governance questions apply there too.
